Grade 8 Teacher – Irma Coulson

What do you love most about your job?

There are numerous aspects of my job that bring me great joy and fulfillment. First and foremost, I am passionate about the opportunity to positively impact the lives of my students. Witnessing their growth and development, both academically and personally, is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I have the privilege to shape their minds and help them realize their full potential is truly fulfilling. Furthermore, I am constantly inspired by the creativity and curiosity of my students. Their eagerness to learn and explore new ideas motivates me to continually adapt my teaching methods and create engaging lesson plans. The ability to ignite their passion for learning and foster their critical thinking skills is an unparalleled experience.

What is a challenge you face?

The emotional investment in my students can sometimes be challenging. Witnessing students facing personal or academic difficulties and dealing with their struggles can be emotionally taxing. Caring deeply for my students while maintaining professional boundaries requires emotional resilience and self-care strategies.

What is a recent quick win, or tiny victory you’d like to celebrate?

It fills me with joy when one of my students feels safe and comfortable enough to come out in my class and share their thoughts and feelings. Knowing that my classroom is a place where this student feels respected, accepted, and supported brings me a sense of pride. Creating a safe and inclusive environment for all my students is one of my top priorities as a teacher, and hearing that my efforts have made a positive impact on this student’s life is truly rewarding. It reinforces my belief that every student deserves to feel safe, valued, and accepted in their learning environment, and it motivates me to continue fostering a supportive space where all students can thrive.

What words of love/encouragement would you like to share with your fellow humans of HDSB?

One of my favourite quotes that I would like to share with you is by Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Keep being the changemakers, the mentors, and the champions of education that you are. Your work matters, and you are making a positive difference in the lives of your students and our community. Keep shining your light and continue to be a beacon of love, encouragement, and inspiration. You are appreciated, valued, and loved.

What is something others may not know about you?

Theater has a special place in my heart, and I was determined to pursue my love for it, even though I wasn’t allowed to participate in the traditional way. Despite the limitations, I found a way to express my creativity by dressing in boys’ costumes and acting as a male actor for a year. It was a unique and challenging experience, but it allowed me to overcome societal norms and pursue my passion for the performing arts. Also, I love dogs. If I wasn’t a teacher, I would have owned a doggy daycare:)
